West Bromwich Albion striker Karlan Grant has admitted he probably should have had a hat-trick at The Hawthorns last night after the Baggies drew 1-1 with Watford.

Although the points on the night were shared, the result did not fairly reflect how the match played out, with West Brom dominating in terms of possession and chances from the very start of the Championship clash.

A goal of the season candidate strike from Ismaila Sarr gave Watford the lead against the run of play in the 12th minute, though, with Grant himself equalising for West Brom on the brink of half-time.

Those goals ended up being the only ones of the match, but Grant believes he should have had more and given the Baggies all three points.

“I probably should have had a hat-trick if I’m honest. I’m gutted about that.” Grant told West Brom club media.

“Saying that, I’m delighted to get on the scoresheet, despite my frustrations.

“I think it was a brilliant performance and it’s nice to get a result, but we’re disappointed we didn’t get all three points based on the chances we managed to create.”

Quiz: Can you remember the score the last time West Brom played at these 26 stadiums?

Grant added: “It’s always nice to get your first goal of the season, especially when it comes as early as the second game, but I am frustrated about the other chances I had because I feel as though I should’ve scored a few more.”

The 24-year-old will not have to wait long to put things right, with West Brom due to face Sheffield United at the Hawthorns in EFL Cup action on Thursday evening.

The Verdict

It’s hard to disagree with what Karlan Grant has said here, and his admission is a telling one in terms of how this match should have resulted in all three points for West Brom.

The Baggies forward had a number of chances during the match, and on another day, he would have come away with at least a brace, if not a hat-trick.

Watford’s goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann was forced into some fine saves on the night, so perhaps he deserves some credit, rather than being critical of Grant.

Of course, West Brom’s top scorer from last campaign will be disappointed with his return on the night given the chances he had, but, he looks set to continue in the side given the recent news regarding Daryl Dike’s fitness, so there will be plenty more chances to find the back of the net in the coming days and weeks.
