Dan Neil is seeking a new club after leaving Sunderland, and Kevin Phillips believes he could thrive at a leading Scottish side amid Rangers interest.

According to Sunderland Echo, Phillips said the midfielder could play for Rangers or Celtic, highlighting his technical quality, box-to-box energy, appetite for the ball and goal threat. He added Neil would suit a team that controls games and creates chances, and would fit in with ease.

The 24-year-old spent the second half of last season on loan at Ipswich Town in the Championship. He is now a free agent after Sunderland confirmed their retained list on Wednesday.

Neil made three Premier League appearances for the Black Cats before moving to Portman Road, where he helped Ipswich clinch promotion back to the top flight.

There has been no firm indication over his next destination at this stage.
