The Rams are looking to bring back one of their promotion winners.

Derby County have reportedly agreed a fee with Cardiff City for the transfer of midfielder Ebou Adams, with the midfielder set to sign a three-year deal with the Rams.

Paul Warne has certainly hinted at his desire to bring the Cardiff midfielder back to the club, following his half-season loan spell with them in the previous campaign, when he helped them to win promotion back to the Championship. He said that they need an "Ebou type" midfielder, as per Dominic Dietrich.

The 28-year-old himself didn't hold back when asked about his desire to return to Pride Park again next season. After pleading from the Derby faithful at the end of last season to bring him back to the club, he told BBC Radio Derby: "I think the fans have said it all," and added: "It's never goodbye from me."

It looks like he's not going to have to go back on his never goodbye pledge, as a deal which would see him return to being a County player is said to be done.

Derby County set to sign Ebou Adams

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Warne's side have finally reached an agreement with their now Championship rivals for a deal that will see Adams return to Pride Park, where he helped County to win promotion from League One last season.

The Telegraph's John Percy had previously stated that the two clubs were getting close to an agreement on a fee just shy of the £1 million mark. O'Rourke's reporting suggests that the deal is done, and the 28-year-old is set to sign a three-year deal with Derby.

Bluebirds manager Erol Bulut had previously admitted that his team and the Rams were getting closer to agreeing a deal for the Gambian international. This was the reason the Turkish boss gave as to why the midfielder wasn't involved in their opening pre-season game of the summer against Kidderminster Harriers.

Adams started all 17 of the games that he appeared in for Derby last season, after making the switch in the January transfer window, providing a goal and an assist along the way.

Ebou Adams is an essential signing for Derby

There has been a fairly sizable shift in Warne's squad's status over this summer period. Important contributors to their promotion-winning season like Joe Wildsmith, Conor Hourihane, and Louie Sibley have all left.

Those latter two leaving, combined with the scheduled departure of Max Bird to Bristol City, following an agreement they struck with the Rams to buy him in the winter but loan him straight back to Pride Park for the rest of the campaign, means their options in the centre of the pitch are much weaker.

Their current shortcomings at centre-mid made the deal for Adams a must-do. He's a proven entity for them - maybe not at this level, but they know what they can expect from him. He's already ingratiated into the dressing room, and has the respect and support of the fans.
