Köln’s squad planners Thomas Kessler and Tim Steidten have seen off several clubs for the 18-year-old, with Steidten familiar with him from his time as West Ham’s technical director.

Köln have already converted Jahmai Simpson-Pusey’s loan from Manchester City into a permanent signing for a reported €six million. Heskey and the centre-back were youth-team colleagues at the English club.

Heskey made his first-team debut in City’s EFL Cup opener last season, a competition Pep Guardiola’s side went on to win. He has 41 goals across City’s youth sides, including 18 in 21 U18 Premier League starts. He is the son of former England striker Emile Heskey.
