Kristjaan Speakman has returned to football as FC Copenhagen’s new sporting director, his first post since leaving Sunderland earlier this year.

FC Copenhagen said in a statement that he emerged as the preferred candidate after a rigorous recruitment process, and confirmed he will begin on 1 July.

He arrives after a poor campaign in which the club played in the relegation division for the first time. Victory in the division’s European play-off means they will enter the Conference League at the qualification stage in 2026/27.

Speakman described Copenhagen as a fantastic club with a special history and a unique fan base, and set out an ambition to develop all sporting functions to bring trophies back to the city.

He outlined an immediate focus on supporting Bo Svensson and the sporting staff, assembling a first-team squad that can qualify for the UEFA Conference League and win the championship, with work already well under way.

Longer term, he plans to lead a strategic roadmap to strengthen the club’s sporting position across all teams and departments, noting there is a lot to do in both the short and long term.
