Laporta discusses if Barcelona has left Alvarez race for Arsenal

Joan Laporta has discussed Barcelona’s interest in Arsenal target Julian Alvarez and revealed that the Catalan club have not given up on signing the Argentinian. Barcelona have been keen on Alvarez since the end of last season and quickly made an offer for his signature, but Atletico Madrid rejected the proposal.

Atletico were angered by the offer and made it clear that the World Cup winner was not for sale. They insisted that Alvarez would not leave the club unless his release clause was paid, maintaining a firm position despite interest from elsewhere.

Barcelona Continue Pursuit

Atletico later received another offer from Real Madrid and rejected that proposal as well, further increasing their frustration. Alvarez then publicly stated that he wanted to leave, creating a transfer saga around his future.

Atletico subsequently vowed not to sell the attacker to Barcelona or any other club. Alvarez was also booed by supporters during their latest league match, adding further tension to the situation.

In recent weeks, it was believed that Barcelona had moved on from their pursuit, which would have been good news for Arsenal as the Gunners continue to hope Alvarez will open the door to a move to their club.

Laporta Keeps Barcelona Hopes Alive

However, Laporta has now confirmed that Barcelona remain determined to pursue the attacker. Speaking via ESPN, he said: “We’re keeping our hopes up and sticking to our plan — with all due respect to Atlético — of trying to sign him.

“We would like to reach an agreement with Atlético; we are therefore standing by our proposal, our offer to Atlético, and hopefully there will be an understanding between the two clubs.

“And we are doing this, I repeat, with the utmost respect for Atlético, the club’s directors and for the club as a whole.”

Laporta’s comments make it clear that Barcelona have not abandoned their pursuit of Alvarez. The Catalan club remain hopeful of reaching an agreement with Atletico and continues to stand by their proposal.

For Arsenal, the latest development is not ideal. The Gunners are hoping to secure a late move for Alvarez, but Barcelona’s continued interest means they still face competition for the attacker.

With Atletico holding their position and Barcelona refusing to give up, Alvarez’s future remains uncertain as the transfer window nears its close.
