Late fightback goes unrewarded

Eintracht went down to a 3-2 defeat at Bayern Munich. After trailing 3-0, late goals from Burkardt (77’ pen) and Kalimuendo (86’) were not enough to salvage anything.

Four changesAlbert Riera made four changes to his line-up for the meeting in Munich. Nnamdi Collins, Mo Dahoud, Ellyes Skhiri and Oscar Højlund replaced Rasmus Kristensen (injured), Robin Koch (ill), Mario Götze and Arnaud Kalimuendo (both bench). Nathaniel Brown captained the team for the first time in Koch’s absence.

Behind from early on The injury-hit Eagles, who were without the services of Arthur Theate, Can Uzun, Younes Ebnoutalib, Kristensen, Ansgar Knauff, Michy Batshuayi and Koch, came under heavy pressure from the beginning at the sold-out Allianz Arena.  With 16 minutes gone, Aleksandar Pavlovic was afforded space to shoot from the edge of the box and found the bottom right corner with a placed strike, giving the hosts an early lead.

Kane scores from corner Bayern went two goals up in the 28th minute when Josip Stanisic flicked on a corner to Harry Kane, who headed in from close range. Eintracht barely got any respite from the home side’s pressure, and even when they did manage to counter, they lacked the cutting edge to create any clear-cut opportunities. That meant it remained 2-0 at the interval.

Burkardt comebackRiera made a triple substitution on the hour mark, with Jonathan Burkardt making his comeback after a lengthy absence in place of Dahoud. Götze and Kalimuendo also came on for Ritsu Doan and Ayoube Amaimouni-Echghouyab. Burkardt almost had an instant impact in the 62nd minute when he hit the post after being set up by Kalimuendo in the penalty area.

Kane againHowever, when Frankfurt played a misplaced pass in build-up on 68 minutes, Bayern took advantage, with Kane firing in his second goal from distance. Deficit reduced Kane was in the thick of the action again in the 77th minute, when he conceded a penalty with a foul on Oscar Højlund. Following a VAR review, Burkardt confidently buried the spot-kick into the bottom left corner.

Kalimuendo offers late hopeEintracht were enjoying their best spell of the game and forced a mistake out of Bayern with their high pressing in the 86th minute. Joshua Kimmich played a pass across his own area to Minjae Kim, but Kalimuendo was quicker to it and struck to make it 3-2.

The draw was very much within reach for the Eagles in the closing phase of the game, but when Götze narrowly missed the target from close range from Fares Chaibi’s cross, that was that.
