Laura Freigang – Scout report | OneFootball

The Frauen-Bundesliga is a league with a fascinating history, remarkable talent and incredible strength. Next to the powerhouses at Wolfsburg and Bayern, there are teams hosting a variety of talent. In this particular scout report, we will look at one specific talent: Laura Freigang of Eintracht Frankfurt.

Data

The data used in this analysis comes from Wyscout. In the dataset for the striker, I’ve selected each player who primarily plays in the striker position. There are other players who have played in this position. But, I’ve only selected the players that have played as a striker in a dominant position in the current season. This leaves me with 44 players who qualify in the Frauen-Bundesliga 2021/2022.

The data was retrieved on 5th of November 2022.

I will look at the following categories and metrics to assess her abilities through data:

Shots

Looking at shot quality can be measured in different things. In the scatterplots below I will look at the volume of the shots. And, the expected goals that are generated through the shots.

In the scatterplot above you can see how many of the shots conducted are converted into shots on target. If we look closely towards Laura Freigang we see that she performs above average for shots per 90 with 2,61 shots per 90. In the shots on target %, she scores under average with 41,12%.

If we look at the quality and likelihood of a shot being converted into a goal, we see that Freigang performs very well. She scored above average in shots per 90, as illustrated above, with 2,61 shots per 90. The corresponding likelihood of her scoring a goal per 90 minutes is 0,56 xG. Every 90 minutes she is expected to score over 0,5 goals – in which she scores above average.

Dribbling

Dribbling often is linked to wide midfielders of wingers, but it can be a valuable aspect of a striker’s game as well. The ability to control the ball, progress on the pitch, and deal positively with a 1v1 situation with an opponent defender, is not to be underestimated. Especially when you are not playing a typical central forward role, but playing with two strikers.

In the scatterplot above you can see that Freigang performs under average for the number of dribbles per 90 she has, but just slighly under average. In terms of the success rate she does score above average – albeit slighlty – with 47,14%.

Assists

Expected metrics seem simple but can become incredibly complicated when combining things. In the scatterplot above I’ve taken a look at the probability of the pass becoming an assist per 90 minutes and looking at the actual assists of a player per 90 minutes.

Freigang was expected to give 0,18 assists per 90 minutes and she actually gave 0,19 assists per 90. This means she is slightly overperforming in this metric. In doing so she scores above average in both metrics.

Goals

In the end, the most important thing for a striker is her output: goals. I’m looking at the probability of scoring a goal with a certain short and looking at the actual goals scored by a particular player per 90 minutes.

Laura Freigang had an expected goal number of 0,56 per 90 minutes so she was expected to score 0,56 times per 90 minutes. Her actual goals scored are a little bit below that with 0,55 goals scored per 90 minutes. This means she is slightly underperforming, but still doing very well in the grand scheme of things. She scores above average in both metrics.

Final thoughts

In the data analysis above we have seen a few key elements of Laura Freigang as a striker in the 2021/2022 season. It will be interesting to see if she can go on and improve this season, showing that she is ready for the elite stage in Europe’s football.
