Lazio sporting director Angelo Fabiani is a fan of Mauro Icardi, but Gennaro Gattuso isn’t prepared to welcome the Argentine just yet.
Even though the transfer window in Italy closed on September 1, the Biancocelesti remain active on the market. Earlier this week, they completed the signing of Portuguese defender Diogo Leite on a free transfer, and they could still reinforce their attack with another player, namely Icardi, who has been on their radar for weeks.
The 33-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Galatasaray at the end of the previous campaign, and his agent confirmed discussions between him and Fabiani, who seems keen to bring the former Inter Milan captain back to Serie A.
According to Il Messaggero, Gattuso is still resisting the idea, as he prefers to keep his squad intact and avoid the arrival of a colourful character who could jeopardise the squad’s balance. Moreover, the Calabrian coach has been an advocate of Andrea Pinamonti, urging the club to sign the 27-year-old striker from Sassuolo.
As the Roman newspaper explains, Pinamonti needs to repay Gattuso’s trust to dispel Icardi’s shadow once and for all. The Italian had a difficult outing against Udinese in his full Lazio debut, but he’ll be hoping to make a more positive impact on Saturday against AC Milan.
Interestingly, Pinamonti was rising through Inter Milan’s ranks when Icardi was the club’s main talisman. During his loan spell at Frosinone back in 2019, the Italian said he dreams of playing alongside the former PSG star one day.
I have an excellent relationship with Mauro, even off the pitch. He’s been a big help because he saw himself in me. He gave me advice and helped me a lot.
