Lazio are considering free agent Mauro Icardi, but head coach Gennaro Gattuso has not given the go-ahead. Il Messaggero reports he wants to keep the squad intact, wary of upsetting the balance, and has championed Andrea Pinamonti instead.

Despite the window in Italy closing on the first of September, the club remain busy. They signed Portuguese defender Diogo Leite on a free earlier this week and could yet add another forward.

Icardi, 33, has been unattached since leaving Galatasaray at the end of last season. His agent has confirmed talks with sporting director Angelo Fabiani, who appears keen to bring the former Inter captain back to Serie A.

For Pinamonti, performing now could be decisive. He struggled against Udinese on his first Lazio start and will hope to make a stronger impression against AC Milan on Saturday.

Pinamonti and Icardi built a long-standing friendship at Inter. While on loan at Frosinone in 2019, Pinamonti said he dreamed of playing alongside Icardi and described how the senior striker saw himself in him, offered advice and helped him.
