Lazio have pulled the plug on a move for Mauro Icardi following internal talks. According to Radio Laziale, the club has dropped its pursuit of the free agent after weighing sporting, financial and disciplinary factors linked to his past.
There is effectively no prospect of him joining, even though the striker had been open to negotiating. Rising labour costs and Gennaro Gattuso’s tactical priorities impeded progress, while a contract of Icardi’s scale could complicate January planning.
Lazio explored a one-year deal with an easy option for a second season, which the Argentine was comfortable with. Gattuso favours different attacking profiles and, with Pinamonti and Noslin available, did not want to overload the forward line.
Disciplinary considerations referred to episodes from Icardi’s Inter Milan years, though he is regarded as more mature today. He left Galatasaray in June and has been weighing up his options on a free.
Although the European window is closed, clubs can still register free agents, so his next move remains open.
