According to The Laziali, the 33-year-old has made Lazio his preferred option and offered himself to the club, with sporting director Angelo Fabiani receptive, while Gattuso is hesitant amid fears the signing could unsettle the group and affect dressing-room calm.

Lazio overhauled their attack in the summer, selling Boulaye Dia and Petar Ratkov and recruiting Andrea Pinamonti and Albert Gudmundsson. Gudmundsson and Tijjani Noslin are not out-and-out centre-forwards, leaving Pinamonti as the only natural No 9.

Icardi has been linked for months, with his agent previously confirming talks with Fabiani. He left Galatasaray at the end of last season and remains a free agent, so he can still sign outside the window.

The Argentine was among Serie A’s most prolific strikers in the 2010s, yet his career has also drawn controversy, notably around his former wife and agent, Wanda Nara. He was frozen out at Inter before joining Paris Saint-Germain in summer 2019.
