Lazio captain Mattia Zaccagni has sustained a muscle injury during his team’s win over AC Milan on Sunday evening.
The winger helped his team secure one of their most memorable victories of the season, beating Max Allegri’s 1-0, thanks to Gustav Isaksen’s solitary strike in the 35th minute. Zaccagni played for 83 minutes before leaving his place on the pitch for Matteo Cancellieri.
While the former Hellas Verona man didn’t show any injury signs during the contest, it has now been revealed that he had hurt his right thigh. The official Lazio website released a statement on Wednesday confirming the player’s injury.
Earlier today, following a consultation between the medical staff—Professor Ivo Pulcini, Professor Fabio Rodia, and club doctor Italo Leo, S.S. Lazio issued the following statement. During the league match between Lazio and Milan, Mattia Zaccagni sustained a moderate post-traumatic muscle injury affecting the vastus medialis and vastus intermedius of his right thigh. The player has already begun his recovery protocol.
While the recovery period remains unclear, this injury will certainly deprive Lazio of their skipper’s service for Sunday’s Serie A clash against Bologna, and it also constitutes a blow for the Italian national team, considering how Zaccagni is a regular feature in Gennaro Gattuso’s squad.
The Azzurri are hellbent on avoiding a third straight failure in the World Cup play-offs. They will host Northern Ireland in the semi-final in Bergamo on March 27, and if they manage to prevail, they’ll play the winner between Wales and Bosnia in the final three days later.
