Lazio have suffered a major setback, with Ivan Provedel set to have shoulder surgery and expected to be sidelined for several months.
The club said in a statement that the 31-year-old underwent further tests after persistent shoulder pain. An MRI at the Villa Mafalda Clinic revealed a glenohumeral ligament lesion with involvement of the glenoid labrum, and arthroscopic stabilisation is planned in the coming days.
This followed consultation between medical staff comprising Prof Ivo Pulcini, Prof Fabio Rodia and team doctor Italo Leo.
Maurizio Sarri had recently welcomed back Mario Gila, Manuel Lazzari and Toma Basic, underlining the untimely nature of the goalkeeper’s setback.
Provedel had not missed a minute in Serie A this season, only standing down when Sarri selected Christos Mandas for the Coppa Italia Round of 16 tie against AC Milan.
Mandas has since joined Bournemouth, with 21-year-old Edoardo Motta arriving as his replacement.
Motta, formerly of Reggiana, now faces a sizeable task to cover an extended absence and to vindicate the choices of Angelo Fabiani and Claudio Lotito. Otherwise, the decision to let Mandas depart could be questioned.
