Lazio have been dealt another untimely blow as their goalkeeper Ivan Provedel has undergone season-ending surgery.
The Biancocelesti’s squad has been picked apart by the injury bug since the start of the season. In recent weeks, Maurizio Sarri has received a few boosts, with the likes of Mario Gila, Manuel Lazzari, and Toma Basic returning from injury, leaving only Nicolo Rovella and Samuel Gigot on the treatment table.
But unfortunately for the head coach, he received devastating news on Saturday, as it was announced that his stalwart Provedel will be ruled out of action for several months.
Lazio released an official statement on the club’s website, revealing that the 31-year-old had to undergo clinical tests after complaining of pain in the shoulder, and it turned out that his condition was much more serious than initially envisioned, so he will have to go under the knife in the next few days.
This afternoon, following a consultation between the medical staff composed of Prof. Ivo Pulcini, Prof. Fabio Rodia, and team doctor Italo Leo, SS Lazio released the following statement. Yesterday, goalkeeper Ivan Provedel, due to persistent pain symptoms in his shoulder stemming from a previous match injury, underwent further diagnostic tests. The MRI scan, carried out at the Villa Mafalda Clinic, revealed a lesion of the glenohumeral ligament associated with involvement of the glenoid labrum. In the coming days, the player will undergo arthroscopic shoulder stabilization surgery.
Since the start of the season, Provedel hasn’t missed a minute of action in Serie A. Sarri only dropped him once, when he gave the nod to Christos Mandas against AC Milan in the Coppa Italian Round of 16. The Greek goalkeeper has since joined Bournemouth, with the unsung Edoardo Motta arriving as a replacement.
The 21-year-old will now have a major burden on his shoulders, as La Lazio Siamo Noi expects Provedel to remain on the sidelines for three or four months, meaning that his campaign is practically over. The former Reggiana custodian will try to prove that Angelo Fabiani and Claudio Lotito were right to choose him; otherwise, the decision to send the reliable Mandas away will return to haunt the club officials.
