Lazio ‘to consider’ four defenders as Romagnoli pushes to leave

Lazio are in the market for a new centre-back as Alessio Romagnoli pushes to leave, amid frustration over a pay rise promised if they qualified for the Champions League that never materialised. Roberto Mancini’s Al-Sadd are working on a move to take the 31-year-old to Qatar.

Il Corriere dello Sport reports Maurizio Sarri has tried to convince Romagnoli to stay at Formello, but without success. It adds the defender wants out this month, with renewal talks again on hold.

The report says club directors asked his camp for contract requests in early January. No reply followed, which proved the final straw in an already strained relationship.

Il Messaggero claims Lazio are preparing for life after Romagnoli, keeping tabs on two out-of-contract players from Union Berlin. They are 26-year-old Portuguese centre-back Diogo Leite and his 27-year-old Dutch teammate Danilho Doekhi.

Lazio have also followed Sevilla’s Kike Salas, though the 23-year-old is under contract until June 2029. Another option is Kialonda Gaspar, the 28-year-old Angolan international at Lecce, whose deal runs to 2027.
