Lazio ‘to revisit’ move for Daniele Rugani after January talks

Lazio are weighing a renewed move for Juventus defender Daniele Rugani as they seek a centre-back before the end of the window, La Gazzetta dello Sport suggests.

The Biancocelesti have already added Alfonso Pedraza and Danilho Doekhi on free transfers, and taken Daniele Frattesi from Inter on loan with an option to buy. Gennaro Gattuso has said he still expects a striker and another centre-back.

After missing out on Sergi Dominguez and Noah Markmann, Lazio are tracking Standard Liege’s Ibe Hautekiet, Slavia Prague’s Stepan Chaloupek and Ajax’s Josip Sutalo. Sporting director Angelo Fabiani could yet favour a Serie A veteran over those foreign options.

Rugani, 32, has been on Juventus’ books since 2013 and is considered surplus to requirements. He joined Fiorentina on loan in January but did not make the move permanent. He has two years remaining on his contract and Juventus will try to offload him again, especially after signing Jhon Lucumi from Bologna over the weekend.

Rugani was close to joining Lazio in January, with a deal agreed between the clubs, but the switch was shelved when Alessio Romagnoli’s transfer to Al-Sadd collapsed. A fresh attempt could again hinge on Romagnoli’s situation.

The centre-back has 183 Serie A appearances and has won six Scudetti, four Coppa Italia titles and two Italian Super Cups with Juventus, though he has rarely been a regular starter in Turin.
