Lee Grant is coming under serious scrutiny at Huddersfield Town, which could leave Kevin Nagle with another big decision to make.
After a busy summer transfer window, there was a lot of excitement at Huddersfield Town heading into the current season.
The Terriers were very active in the market, backing new boss Lee Grant with a lot of signings, and, crucially, the vast majority had proven themselves in League One.
Naturally, the expectation was that Huddersfield should be pushing for automatic promotion, with the West Yorkshire outfit widely billed as favourites for the title.
However, given the team are currently outside the play-off places, it’s no surprise that Grant has come under scrutiny from supporters.
Despite the struggles, you would forgive Grant for thinking that there is, at times, an overreaction to the state of the team right now, as they are only four points off the play-offs, albeit nine from the automatic places.
After all, this is a head coach who was up for the November Manager of the Month award, yet a matter of weeks later there are debates among the fans over his future at the club.
Of course, we know that things can change very quickly in football, but any successful club wants stability, which means not getting carried away by the highs or the lows.

But, the fans at Huddersfield are right to have expectations, and there’s no denying that Kevin Nagle’s ambitious talk on his arrival has not been backed up by what they see on the pitch, with the club having suffered relegation to the third tier, and they underachieved last season.
So, that will bring frustration, and given the investment that Nagle has put into the club, he will join fans in questioning why the team is not getting results on a consistent basis.
It’s usually the manager who pays the price in football, and Grant will be aware that if things don’t improve in the coming weeks, the speculation over his future will only increase.
Another issue for the fans, along with the results, is the style of play, with a section unhappy with the way that the team are performing, and the failure to get the right balance.
For example, Alfie May was a big summer signing, but Grant has not found a way to get the most out of the former Birmingham City man, who had been prolific at this level over the years. But, for Huddersfield, he has managed just three league goals in 17 appearances, and he is spending most of his time on the bench.

Plus, at times, Huddersfield can be easy to play against, which is backed up by only two teams having conceded more than Grant’s side this season.
That would point to a lack of structure and organisation, which is again on the manager, and when you look at the players in Huddersfield’s squad, they really shouldn’t be among the worst in the division when it comes to conceding goals.
However, if Nagle does make the call to sack Grant, it will raise further doubts over his ability to take the club forward.
From not keeping Neil Warnock on, to appointing Darren Moore and Andre Breitenreiter, and the disappointing campaign under Michael Duff last time out, it’s fair to say the owner has got a lot wrong, and that was before he turned to the rookie Grant for his first managerial role.
So, his history won’t fill the fans with confidence, and whilst he deserves credit for putting money into the club, he must take accountability for the lack of progress made under each boss.
At some point, it will be argued that he needs to let a head coach stick at it, come through the storm, and hope Huddersfield get through the other side.
