The Terriers boss continues to divide opinion at the Accu Stadium

Huddersfield Town manager Lee Grant has continued to divide opinion amongst Terriers supporters online after they were held to a 1-1 draw at Northampton Town on Tuesday night at Sixfields.

The West Yorkshire outfit have endured an inconsistent first four months under the 42-year-old in what is his first full-time managerial post after previously learning the ropes as assistant to Kieran McKenna at Ipswich Town.

Huddersfield were relegated to League One back in the summer of 2024 after five years of decline in the Championship, yet they were unable to mount any kind of promotion bid in their first season at the level for 12 years last term under both Michael Duff and interim boss, Jon Worthington.

Grant was then instilled back in June, with Town owner, Kevin Nagle, hoping to see an immediate change in fortunes transpire at the Accu Stadium, providing the former Stoke City and Manchester United goalkeeper with the necessary tools required to remould a squad capable of sustaining a promotion challenge throughout the arduous 46-game season.

There has been the occasional sign of such circumstances playing out. However, Tuesday's 1-1 draw against the Cobblers was yet another night of frustration for Terriers supporters as their current winless run in the league stretched to four games, having last emerged victorious with a 3-1 success against Mansfield Town at Field Mill on November 22nd.

Other results across the division in midweek meant that Huddersfield are currently positioned in eighth in the table, having accumulated a tally of 27 points from 19 matches.

It looked as though Huddersfield and their supporters were in for yet another long 90 minutes as Nesta Guinness-Walker put Kevin Nolan's side in front after nine minutes, before Chelsea loanee, Leo Castledine levelled the scores 27 minutes later with his eighth goal of the season across all competitions.

That being said, though, those who made the trip down the M1 from Yorkshire were left cursing their luck once more, as proven by the statistics at the end of the game, with Town forging 12 opportunities in comparison to the three mustered by Northampton, although only five of those would test Ross Fitzsimons in any way.

Despite a clear chance of bouncing back from the 3-2 defeat at Cardiff City on Saturday being on the table for Grant and his players, the Town boss only opted to make three substitutions, all of which came in the final 17 minutes as Cameron Ashia, Joe Taylor and Alfie May entered the fray.

Speaking to official club media after the game, Grant made his frustrations clear, saying: “We hope it proves to be a really important point, but I think you could hear tonight, and if you’ve seen the balance of the game, we probably leave here leaving a little bit frustrated.I certainly am, and I know that the players will be, that they’ve not managed to turn that point into three this evening.

“Of course, we know wins are important, but we come here today full of confidence that we can take all three points, so on the balance of the game, we certainly leave with some frustration.”

However, it's fair to say that some supporters believe Grant has to take full accountability for his thoughts after taking over three-quarters of the match to make a first substitution, as well as handing the aforementioned May just four minutes.

Another frustrated Town fan believes there is no sense of spirit within the squad due to a lack of celebrations when Castledine equalised.

One supporter believes that Grant would have spoken in the same tone regardless of whether Town were able to turn the game on its head.

Apathy and frustration was, unsurprisingly, the general feeling throughout the Town fanbase, with another supporter stating that a low attendance against Wigan Athletic will be in order.

However, not all gave Grant the main portion of blame, with one supporter believing Nagle should be responsible as he hired the Town boss to begin with.

Despite the criticism which continues to fall Grant's way from supporters as Huddersfield remain four points outside the play-off places, the former goalkeeper has been the subject of praise after being nominated for the League One Manager of the Month award for November.

Last month, Town won two, drew one and lost one of their four league fixtures in a mini-burst of impressive form. However, they have since regressed once more and are at risk of falling further behind the play-off pack if they are unable to address their shortcomings.
