Leeds goalkeeper says instinct aided Birmingham shootout success | OneFootball

Leeds United goalkeeper Lucas Perri has said he relied on ‘instinct’ during the club’s penalty shootout win over Birmingham City.

Daniel Farke’s side booked their place in the fifth round of the FA Cup with victory over the Championship side on penalties. Leeds led in the game through Lukas Ncmecha’s goal, but an 89th-minute equaliser from Patrick Roberts forced extra time and penalties.

In the shootout, Perri saved from Tommy Doyle, before Roberts blazed his effort over the bar. Those misses allowed Sean Longstaff to convert and send Leeds into the next round.

The win continues the club’s improvement under Farke, extending their run to one defeat in seven games across all competitions.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Perri praised the ‘fight’ of his team and revealed how he could not rely on the club’s pre-game penalty preparations in the shootout.

“It was an incredible fight from the team. We had a very difficult game, it’s always difficult to play against a team like Birmingham, so congratulations to the whole team for the fight and we got to the next round.

“We had a video (on Birmingham’s penalty takers) but unfortunately for the first two penalties because they didn’t have the number on the shirt it was difficult for me to see. And the third one we didn’t know where he shot so I went on instinct and happy to help the club.”
