Lucas Perri hopes to build on a match-winning display as Leeds United edged past Birmingham City on penalties in the FA Cup.
The Brazilian was busy throughout, producing a superb first-half stop from Jay Stansfield. Lukas Nmecha opened the scoring, then Patrick Roberts levelled via a deflection and, after a chaotic extra time, the tie was settled from 12 yards.
Perri denied Tommy Doyle, Roberts fired over, and Joel Piroe, Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Brenden Aaronson all converted before Sean Longstaff made it four from four. Team-mates raced to celebrate with their goalkeeper.
“It’s always good to have a good game like this. The most important thing is to have confidence in myself. It doesn’t depend on the result but obviously it’s nice to have a game like this. I hope to keep going and helping the club as always,” he said, speaking to TNT Sports.
Perri’s start following a £16million move from Lyon has been mixed, with Daniel Farke criticising him last month before turning to Karl Darlow as first choice. The cup tie handed the Brazilian a chance to regain rhythm.
Before the shootout he and goalkeeping coach Ed Wootten studied Birmingham takers on a water bottle, but he admitted the hosts’ retro kit complicated identification. “We had a video but unfortunately for the first two penalties, since they didn’t have the numbers on their shorts it was difficult for me to see. The third one, we didn’t know exactly where he would shoot so I went with instinct. I’m happy to help the club.”
