Leeds United have formally begun the Elland Road enhancement, with work under way on the West Stand. The club said in a statement that this marks a landmark moment in their 106-year history.
Early works include demolition of the old ticket office and LUTV studio, partial removal of the banqueting suite behind the West Stand, and the removal of floodlights. A temporary hospitality structure is being erected behind the Kop.
Executives from Leeds United, the Leeds United Foundation and Leeds City Council attended a ceremony, joined by club ambassadors Stuart Dallas, Tony Dorigo and Eddie Gray. The new West Stand will be built over the existing structure as phase one of plans to reach UEFA Category 4 status.
Increasing capacity is viewed as vital, with a 32,000-strong season-ticket waiting list. The project will also allow Leeds, with civic partners, to bid to host major international tournaments and showcase events, benefiting the Leeds City Region.
Plans set out include improved seating, comfort and sightlines, enhanced concourses and fan spaces, a more inclusive and accessible environment, and world-class hospitality. Leeds believe the revamped Elland Road will help attract top talent by providing a stage befitting elite-level football.
The club will provide regular updates throughout the build.
