Leeds United have extended Brenden Aaronson’s contract to 2029 after the midfielder signed a new three-year deal.

According to Leeds Live, he was one of three players due to be out of contract next summer, and the club have secured him for a further two years. He is 25, turning 26 next month.

A favourite of Daniel Farke, Aaronson has been praised for work-rate. His upturn in form has been tempered by inconsistent final ball, and the decision arrives amid a split in supporter opinion.

The USMNT midfielder played once at this summer’s home World Cup and viewed last season as his best, scoring four and assisting five.

He has a strong injury record and is the squad’s only specialist number 10. He is set to start against Nottingham Forest as a wide 10 this weekend due to Noah Okafor’s injury.

Aaronson is the first of the trio to renew, with Lukas Nmecha and Ilia Gruev the others. Joel Piroe’s contract was also due to expire before his loan to West Ham United, who will sign him permanently if promoted in a package topping the £10m paid in 2023, and Leeds can extend his deal by 12 months at any time. Aaronson has 14 goals and 10 assists in 129 games and is the third renewal in two days after Joe Rodon and Jayden Bogle, while Ethan Ampadu signed in early June.
