Leeds United avoided conceding a penalty at Brentford when VAR ruled the attacker offside, overturning John Brooks's decision at the Gtech Community Stadium, with an immediate explanation given in the ground.

Following a bright Leeds start, Brentford grew into it and in the 35th minute Brooks pointed to the spot after Dango Ouattara went down under Gabriel Gudmundsson’s challenge from a left-wing cross. According to Leeds Live, the review deemed the Brentford forward offside and the penalty was rescinded, with play restarting via an indirect free-kick.

Replays showed Ouattara marginally ahead of the last defender when the ball was delivered, the final major moment of a first half short on quality. Daniel Farke’s side had begun the sharper and Noah Okafor drew the best save.

Early in the second half, Leeds appealed for a penalty when Dominic Calvert-Lewis went down while shielding the ball and backing into Nathan Collins. Brooks waved it away and a brief VAR check supported the on-field call.

A handball review moments later was also dismissed. Leeds arrived on the back of a good draw with Liverpool and a win over Chelsea.
