Leeds United have lodged an appeal over the 34th-minute goal in Monday’s 4-1 win against Newcastle United, with a second goals panel to determine the scorer.

The initial adjudication panel credited Jayden Bogle after ruling Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s header deflected off a defender on its way in at Elland Road. Calvert-Lewin later scored just before half-time to make it 3-0.

Bogle was informed during the interval that the second goal had been awarded to him, and he and Calvert-Lewin were seen speaking with referee Michael Salisbury after the break.

“I didn’t know anything about it. Nothing about it! I said to the ref that I didn’t really fancy telling him, especially at half-time,” he told Sky Sports.

Calvert-Lewin said: “At half-time the ref told me they’d given it to Jayden and that was the first I’d heard of it. It is what it is. I’ll take the assist, I guess.”

He also posted a tongue-in-cheek message on social media, calling the decision scandalous and asking how to appeal.

Leeds have started well under Daniel Farke, sitting third after four matches with two wins and two draws. They host Crystal Palace on Sunday at 2pm, then face reigning champions Arsenal on 10 October at 12:30pm after the international break.
