Leeds United have been put on alert over Igor Paixao after Newcastle United’s attempt to sign Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg from Marseille collapsed.

Footmercato reports that OM owner Frank McCourt was left monumentally angry by Hojbjerg’s rejection and that the club had hoped the €15 million fee would ease financial pressure.

Leeds are not pursuing Hojbjerg. Their long-standing interest centres on Paixao, 25, who joined OM from Feyenoord last August for a reported €35 million.

The Brazilian delivered 12 goals and seven assists in 42 appearances, mainly from the left wing, including two in a 4-0 Champions League win over Ajax last September.

OM may look to cash in on Paixao, and while he appears keen to stay in Ligue 1, a sale remains possible before the window closes.

Leeds were keen before signing Noah Okafor last term and could return to Paixao, having reportedly held talks with his representatives.

Daniel Farke still needs greater depth out wide, with Okafor the leading option on the left, while Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James have yet to impose themselves in the Premier League.
