Sebastiaan Bornauw is heading to Hamburg SV after bidding farewell to Leeds United, with team-mates flooding social media with messages. The Belgian is on the brink of a return to Germany only 12 months after arriving at Elland Road.

The player said in a post that it had been a short chapter he would never forget, praised the MOT family, thanked supporters for making him feel at home from day one, loved wearing the badge, especially on Elland Road nights, and wished the club well.

Anton Stach replied with two red hearts and summer signing Tarik Muharemovic added one of his own. Gabriel Gudmundsson addressed him as Sebinho with praying hands. Noah Okafor sent fingers-crossed emojis, while Willy Gnonto wished him luck, calling him his little wolf.

Bornauw joined on a four-year deal last summer following a £5.1 million move and made 14 appearances under Daniel Farke. Despite limited minutes, the head coach rated his contribution highly.

Last week Farke underlined the defender’s value, noting a strong points return when he started and his ability to play across the back line. He stressed discussions were open, he would have been content if Bornauw stayed, yet would respect a wish to do something different.
