Leeds United are hopeful of securing Borussia Monchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi as Sebastiaan Bornauw nears a move to Hamburg.
According to Leeds Live, the club want a replacement in place before approving Bornauw’s exit and have moved quickly through a ringfenced centre-back shortlist. The report adds a deal for Elvedi is viewed as likely.
Elvedi has more than 300 Bundesliga appearances and 73 caps for Switzerland at 29. He featured 34 times under Daniel Farke during the manager’s 2022/23 season at Gladbach.
He is right-footed but usually plays on the left of central defence, and did so for all of Switzerland’s games on their run to the World Cup quarter-finals this summer. He is six foot two.
Elvedi has spent 15 years with Gladbach and has one year left on his contract. He owns 15 Champions League appearances, his most recent coming five years ago.
Bornauw’s push to leave has come from the player’s side. He started only five Premier League games last season after a £5 million move from Wolfsburg.
After Wednesday’s friendly with Manchester United, Farke said he would have liked to keep him but that the club will also consider what the player wants.
