According to Telegraph, Leicester City are in advanced talks to appoint Gary Rowett as manager on a short-term deal to the end of the season after dropping into the Championship relegation zone. Rowett, a former Leicester player, has emerged as the leading candidate three weeks after the sacking of Martí Cifuentes.
The 51-year-old left Oxford in December and is regarded as a steady Championship operator, having guided them to safety last season on a tight budget. He has previously managed Birmingham City, Millwall, Oxford United and Stoke City.
Rowett turned down an offer from Blackburn Rovers last week, and they subsequently appointed Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill. Blackburn’s 3-1 win at QPR on Saturday pushed Leicester into the bottom three.
Leicester have lost four matches in a row under first-team coach Andy King. Last Tuesday they were beaten 4-3 at home by Southampton despite leading 3-0, then they went out of the FA Cup at Southampton on Saturday.
Supporters are in open revolt, with pressure mounting on chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha and director of football Jon Rudkin as the threat of a slide to the third tier grows.
The club were docked six points last week for breaching Football League financial rules, and are still considering an appeal. Talks with Rowett are expected to progress within 24 hours, and if a deal is agreed his first match would be away at Stoke City, a former club, this weekend.
