Leonardo Balerdi has joined AS Roma on a season-long loan.

L'Équipe reports that the former Marseille captain completed the move on Sunday, the deal carrying an option for a permanent transfer. He had two years left on his OM contract, so his time there should therefore be over if Roma exercise the clause.

Balerdi arrived at Marseille in 2020, initially on loan from Borussia Dortmund. Over time he became a key figure in the dressing room, despite spells when the Vélodrome crowd were critical.

He leaves having made 200 appearances for the club across six seasons.

The defender now heads to Serie A and will return to the Champions League with Roma. His new side are due to face Paris Saint-Germain on 25 November.
