Leverkusen chief backs Boniface to rediscover best form

Simon Rolfes has backed Victor Boniface to rediscover his best after an injury-affected 2025/26 loan at Werder Bremen.

“The result of the surgery gave him encouragement,” Rolfes said. “I have a good feeling that he is motivated to get back into shape.” He was speaking to Kicker.

Boniface was a key figure in Bayer Leverkusen’s double-winning 2023/24 campaign, but could not sustain that level during an underwhelming 2025/26 loan, hampered by injuries.

He underwent surgery in January to address a long-standing knee issue and has since returned to Leverkusen ahead of pre-season.

Pre-season now offers the forward a chance to make an impression on new head coach Carles Martínez Novell.

“It's about him helping himself, and us helping him to get back into good shape. Then we'll see," Rolfes said.
