Despite being heavily linked with a move, Jonas Hofmann turned down a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia during the last transfer window.

"It had less to do with personal matters; in the end, it just didn't all work out," the 34-year-old pointed out in an interview with Kicker.de.

Instead, Hofmann was happy to stay at Bayer Leverkusen, even though he knows his chances of playing time are slim.

"The competition is tough, definitely. There are a lot of players. I have to say, I'm relaxed. I know what to expect here," he said calmly.

With Hofmann's contract set to expire in 2027, after four successful years together, their paths seem very likely to diverge.

“I'm not finished [with my playing career] yet. Maybe I am here in Leverkusen, but I definitely want to continue [playing].

“I can reveal that much. If I listen to my gut, I still want to play for another two or three years,” the veteran said confidently.

"We [he and his family] can very well imagine going abroad, because now, of course, the enjoyment factor is also important,.

“I don't know if anyone in Germany is still interested in a 35-year-old. It could even involve crossing the ocean," he said, hinting at the MLS.

“I just want to do something completely different. At some point, you might feel like you just want to get away, see something new, have an adventure," he concluded.
