Lewandowski and Muller edge Bayern past Freiburg | OneFootball

Goals from Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller were enough as the league leaders scraped past Freiburg to increase their lead at the top of the Bundesliga.

Kingsley Coman and Serge Gnabry started out wide for the hosts with Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka in midfield with David Alaba partnering Jerome Boateng in the heart of the defence.

Hansi Flick’s side came out with clear intent as they looked to put Freiburg under pressure and they completely dominated the opening stages, creating chances at will. Gnabry looked Bayern’s most threatening player going forward.

It was a horrible start for Freiburg, losing Baptiste Santamaria in the opening minutes to a knee injury. Their bad start was compounded just minutes later when Bayern took a deserved lead.

Serge Gnabry picked up the ball and drove at the Freiburg defence before finding Thomas Muller on the edge of the box. Muller then played a gorgeous one-touch pass to Robert Lewandowski who smashed home past Florian Muller for the games opening goal just seven minutes in.

Bayern controlled the game for the first 15 minutes before Freiburg had their first real chance of the game. The ball was clipped into Bayern’s penalty area and the champions did not deal with the ball well and Sallai fired his shot towards the bottom corner, forcing a good save from Manuel Neuer.

Gnabry continued to look menacing however just before the half-hour mark, the German international again was struck down by an injury and was replaced by Leroy Sane.

Bayern continued to control the half, maintaining possession however, Freiburg did well to limit the quality of the home side’s chances. Despite being outplayed for the majority of the half, Freiburg went into the main break just a goal behind with plenty to play for.

The home side started to half just as they finished the first, on top. Bayern continued to control possession and have their way in the match as Freiburg offered very little going forward.

Lewandowski had a great chance as his shot cannoned off the post, then the rebound fell to Goretzka who forced a good save from Florian Muller in Freiburg’s goal. Just four minutes later, however, the visitors were level.

After defender Alphonso Davies needlessly conceded a corner, it gave Freiburg a rare opportunity to put pressure on the home side and they did just that. The corner was whipped in and it made its way to Nils Petersen at the back post and the forward headed low past Manuel Neuer to give his side life in the contest.

Bayern dominated the game, but they did not finish Freiburg off, and it came back to haunt them. After conceding, Bayern continued to push in search of the goal they would see them take the lead.

Just ten minutes later Bayern had their goal. A good cross from Kingsley Coman was met with an attacking Leroy Sane and ball fell to Thomas Muller who volleyed home to give the hosts a deserved lead.

Hansi Flick then made two changes to his side, Kimmich and Coman were taken off and replaced by Corentin Tolisso and Jamal Musiala as Flick looked to inject more life into his side. Bayern was still in control of the match however they were sitting deeper as the half went on.

Freiburg finished the game the stronger side as they went in search of an equalizer and they nearly had it as normal time expired. The ball somehow found its way to an unmarked Petersen who had his shot rattle off the crossbar as Bayern were lucky not to concede.

The win sees Hansi Flick’s side move four points clear at the top of the table with Augsburg up next for the champions.
