The midfielder has been an important player for Lewes during her time at the club but she has made the tough decision to move on this summer.

Announcing her departure, Howells said “My time at Lewes has come to an end. It is a sad day for me, but I know in my heart it is the right decision.

“Sadly, the women’s game hasn’t grown enough yet for people like myself to not struggle each day, especially with the current climate. I hope that players continue to strive for better so that we can continue to live our dreams that we have all worked so hard for.

“Lewes has been my home since 2019, they put their trust in me when I had a career-ending injury. They didn’t see me kick a ball for over a year and still believed I was good enough. They allowed me to be authentically myself each day, and they gave me an extended family that I will forever cherish.

“To the staff and my teammates, I love you. Thank you for the laughs, headaches, endless amounts of joy and memories to last a lifetime. To the fans, you’re the best, we heard you every game, you are what makes the club so special. To my family and partner, thank you for your support, love and sacrifices over so many years that you all had to make for me, I am so grateful and I hope I’ve made you proud.

“Lewes, you have my heart. I have to focus on my career now, but there won’t be a day where I won’t think about the club, the people and the way they have all changed my life. This hurts right now, but I’m proud of my journey, and I’m excited for my next.

“Once a Rook, always a Rook.”

Howells is the second high-profile departure at Lewes this summer with top scorer Ellie Mason having also made the decision to move on.
