Liam Rosenior is using the Conference League to blood Strasbourg’s fringe players, and will do so again against Breidablik on Thursday at 21:00. Strasbourg sit top and are already through to the round of 16.
According to L'Équipe, Mamadou Sarr, Valentin Barco and Diego Moreira have rarely started in the Conference, often resting on Thursday nights. Rosenior says the approach keeps the squad engaged and builds experience for those who need it.
Martial Godo, Mathis Amougou, Rafael Luis and Rabby Nzingoula have played more in Europe than in Ligue 1. He added the team’s output has been similar in Europe and Ligue 1, which is uncomfortable for the supposed leaders given last season’s collapse over the final two Ligue 1 rounds.
Godo and Andrew Omobamidele have strengthened their cases. The Ivorian forward has two goals, two assists and a won penalty in four games. Omobamidele impressed against Jagiellonia and at Aberdeen, and seems ahead of Lucas Hogsberg.
Rafael Luis and Kendry Paez have underscored their limits, even against Slovan Bratislava. The Benfica loanee struggled, whether at Häcken or in Scotland last week.
Rosenior said a bigger squad and playing twice a week slow on-field connections. He contrasted it with last season’s tighter 13-player core and more training.
Rotations will continue, with Mamadou Sarr and Guéla Doué preparing for the Africa Cup of Nations. He has also tested five different systems in the first five matches.
