Liga MX ‘to seek’ FIFA approval for Libertadores and Sudamericana return | OneFootball

Liga MX have revived plans to rejoin the Copa Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana, with talks to be reopened with Concacaf and FIFA to secure permission. El Universal reports that the move aims to restore international exchange and raise the level of Mexican clubs.

League president Francisco Iturbide has said fresh attempts will be made to obtain guest entries into Conmebol competitions. He said the league and the Mexican federation had already applied to Concacaf and FIFA, received negative responses, and that FIFA are currently following a directive against cross-confederation club participation.

Mexican sides have been absent from the Libertadores since 2016, when Pumas UNAM, Toluca and Puebla featured.

There is notable history, with Cruz Azul, Chivas and Tigres all reaching Libertadores finals without lifting the trophy. In the Sudamericana, Pachuca were champions in 2006 after beating Colo-Colo.

If approval is granted, meetings between Mexican and Brazilian clubs could return, with Flamengo among those who could face Liga MX opposition again after a decade away.
