Lincoln City’s official website are claiming that they dominated World Champions Chelsea last night and maybe they have a point.
I’ll let them have that, for sure. They certainly deserved something more than they got, they didn’t deserve to be the losing side because for chunks of that game last night, huge chunks in fact, they were the better side.
We can chat about possession and say that Chelsea had the lion share of it, because they did. In that sense, it was Chelsea who dominated the game. But in terms of threat, chances on goal, and overall play, Lincoln City were better than Chelsea and Chelsea were terrible in all honesty.
They can be thankful for a stern and angry half time team talk by manager Enzo Manresca that spurred on two quick goals after half time to turn things around, one of which being a wonder goal from Tyrique George. Chelsea got lucky, hugely lucky.
If Chelsea didn’t have that five minutes in them, it would have been an embarrassing game over scenario for them.
Jorrel Hato defends against Lincoln
Their official website wrote after the game:
‘City bowed out of the Carabao Cup after pushing World Champions Chelsea all the way at the LNER Stadium on Tuesday night.
‘A dominant first half from City was capped off by cool finish by Rob Street sending the Imps into the break ahead but the Premier League side wasted no time in the second period scoring two goals in five minutes to seal a 2-1 win.’
I was super impressed with Lincoln to be honest and the way they played and approached this game. They just had more energy and wanted it more than Chelsea but also had the quality to back up the tenacity.
