Victor Lindelof’s Europa League triumph with Aston Villa followed a transfer that collapsed at the last moment. Former Fiorentina sporting director Daniele Pradè later conceded the club left the Swede embarrassed by pulling the deal.
According to Football Italia, the centre back was a free agent after eight years at Manchester United, had agreed terms with Fiorentina and even had a medical scheduled.
The move hinged on Pietro Comuzzo departing. He then rejected a proposed switch to Al Hilal, while Pradè said Simone Inzaghi had pushed for him and a €35m offer was made, which Comuzzo also turned down.
With Florence no longer an option, Lindelof waited until deadline day before Villa signed him on a free.
The 31-year-old made 27 competitive appearances this season and recorded one assist. He was also used to strong effect in a new midfield role.
He started there in last night’s 3-0 Europa League final victory over SC Freiburg.
