Lingard set to take Corinthians’ 77 with work visa pending | OneFootball

Jesse Lingard is awaiting a Brazilian work visa before he can be registered by Corinthians, who intend to hand him the number 77 shirt.

According to Globo.com, the club have prepared to announce the English forward, and he has already trained separately.

The number carries weight, 1977 ended a long drought as Corinthians beat Ponte Preta to win the Campeonato Paulista.

In 2006, Marcelinho Carioca wore 77 as seven was taken, his return brought five games, four defeats and one win.

Jadson returned in 2017 and was given 77 because 10 was with reserve Guilherme. That year he won the Brasileiro and Paulista, playing 48 games with 10 goals and six assists.

Three years later Jô took 77 while Luan had seven. Corinthians lost the Paulista final to Palmeiras, finished mid table in the league and reached the Sudamericana semi finals. He made 34 appearances and scored eight.

In 2023, winger Chrystian Barletta chose 77 in homage to the 1977 title. He played five times without a goal or assist before moving to Ceará.

Attacking midfielder Igor Coronado wore 77 in early 2024, injuries disrupted his spell as Rodrigo Garro shone. He left by mutual consent after 67 games, 31 starts, seven goals and five assists.
