The French defender - signed from RB Leipzig back in 2021 - is out of contract in summer 2026. Talks have been ongoing between the France international and his club over the last season or so but no agreement has yet been reached.

It’s been reported that the 26-year-old is seeking a deal worth £200k per week in order to renew and sporting director Richard Hughes has so far not bowed to those demands.

Konate has been free to speak to potentially interested overseas clubs since January 1 but right now it looks as though options are thin on the ground.

Madrid and PSG back out of Konate deal

Real Madrid backed out of a potential free transfer a few weeks ago - stating that they no longer believed Konate was of the requisite standard to take their club forward.

No doubt the player’s wages demands will have figured in their decision to move on. And now comes a report in Foot01 in France which states that Paris Saint-Germain have ALSO decided to put their interest in Konate on hold.

Anfield Watch first revealed PSG’s plans to bring Konate back to his home country but the landscape has changed since then.

With the manner in which they dealt with Gianluigi Donnarumma and the current impasse over Ousmane Dembele’s new contract it is clear the Parisians will not continue to spend fantasy money on new contracts.

Konate running out of options

And now Konate has come acropper according to the French source - with the treble winners not willing to satisfy Konate’s demands either.

Another potential destination - Bayern Munich - can also be ruled out as Dayot Upamecano seals a new contract in Bavaria.

That means Liverpool have done well to hold their nerve over Konate. Right now it looks as though his best option would be to renew at Anfield - and the Premier League champions may even end up sealing a deal at a much lower cost than initially predicted.

Maybe Konate and his entourage overestimated the demand for the centre-back’s services and he could well remain on Merseyside beyond this summer.
