Liverpool handed Alexander Isak injury concern as striker leaves Sweden camp | OneFootball

Liverpool striker Alexander Isak has withdrawn from the Sweden squad with a minor injury and will return to his club for further assessment.

The 27-year-old will miss Sweden’s remaining Nations League fixtures against Poland, Bosnia & Herzegovina and Romania after being deemed unavailable for selection.

Isak played the full 90 minutes of Sweden’s 2-1 victory over Romania on Friday and opened the scoring after 20 minutes at the Strawberry Arena.

Viktor Gyokeres added Sweden’s second before half-time as they made a winning start to their Nations League campaign.

However, the Swedish Football Association confirmed on Sunday that Isak and Burnley defender Hjalmar Ekdal had both been forced to leave the camp because of minor injuries.

The pair will undertake their respective rehabilitation programmes in consultation with their clubs.

Liverpool subsequently confirmed that Isak would return to Merseyside and undergo checks with their medical staff at the AXA Training Centre.

The extent and precise nature of the problem have not yet been disclosed, although its description as a minor injury will provide some encouragement for Liverpool.

Isak’s fitness will be particularly important after he made an impressive start to his second campaign with the club.

The striker has started each of Liverpool’s opening five Premier League matches and scored four goals, including the winner in their 1-0 victory at Bournemouth before the international break.

That tally has already matched his league total from an injury-disrupted debut season on Merseyside.

Isak joined Liverpool from Newcastle United in 2025 but broke his leg during his first campaign, preventing him from building the consistent run of appearances he has managed this term.

Liverpool will hope the precautionary nature of his withdrawal means he avoids another spell on the sidelines.

Iraola’s side are not back in Premier League action until October 11, giving Isak approximately two weeks to recover before a significant test against Manchester City at Anfield.

He is the latest Premier League player to withdraw from international duty during the current break, with several clubs managing fitness concerns following a demanding summer schedule.

Liverpool will now assess Isak before determining whether he can resume training ahead of City’s visit.
