Federico Chiesa transfer latest as Liverpool weigh January decision

Federico Chiesa’s Liverpool future is coming under increasing scrutiny, with fresh reporting from Sport Witness indicating that a return to Italy is gathering momentum ahead of the January window. The 28-year-old has endured a difficult period at Anfield and, as things stand, there is little to suggest a change in direction is close.

Chiesa arrived from Juventus in 2024 with genuine expectation around what he could offer Liverpool’s forward line. Instead, his contribution has remained limited. After recording two goals and two assists in 14 matches during his first campaign, he followed that with three goals and three assists across 36 appearances last season. Those numbers underline a player who has never fully established himself.

Italy clubs monitoring Chiesa situation

Interest from Serie A is real. Inter Milan, Lazio and Atalanta are all said to be watching developments closely, with each club aware that Liverpool may be prepared to listen to offers in the winter market. At this stage, there has been no formal move, no negotiations with the player’s camp and no direct breakthrough with Liverpool.

That waiting game is significant. Potential suitors want clarity on whether Liverpool are willing to do business, and on what terms. As reported in Italy, “There’s no deal yet, but January could transform Chiesa into one of the most interesting names on the Italian market.”

Liverpool stance before January window

From Liverpool’s side, the key factor is Chiesa’s standing under Andoni Iraola. He has yet to feature this season, which points to a player currently outside the head coach’s main plans. While his contract runs until 2028, long deals do not always guarantee long futures, especially when game time has effectively disappeared.

Liverpool also explored attacking options in the summer, missing out on targets including Yankuba Minteh and Ismaïla Sarr. That context matters because it suggests the club have already been assessing alternatives in wide areas.

January transfer window may suit all parties

Unless there is a sudden shift, Chiesa appears to be heading towards a decisive winter. Serie A offers familiarity, profile and a chance to restart. For Liverpool, moving him on could free up space, wages and a squad place for a better fit in Iraola’s system. The situation is not yet advanced, but the direction of travel looks increasingly clear.

Our View

From a hopeful Liverpool supporter’s perspective, this feels like one of those transfers that simply has not worked out as anyone imagined. Chiesa arrived with pedigree, experience and the kind of one v one quality that looked tailor-made for big moments. There was always a sense that, if fitness and rhythm aligned, Liverpool might unlock a top-class attacker.

Sadly, it has never really clicked. The production has been modest, the opportunities have dried up and the absence of any appearance this season says plenty. If Iraola does not see him as part of the core group, then dragging the situation out until next summer would make little sense.

The hopeful angle for Liverpool fans is that a January exit could still become useful business. Inter, Lazio and Atalanta are serious clubs, and if multiple sides are interested, that can help Liverpool secure respectable terms. Even if that means a loan with an obligation or a structured permanent deal, it would give the club room to reshape the attack.

Supporters will also look at this as a chance to back Iraola with players suited to his demands. If Chiesa moves on, Liverpool can be more decisive in targeting the right profile for the next phase of the squad build. Sometimes the best outcome is a clean solution for everyone, and this increasingly looks like one of those cases.
