Liverpool may have received a big boost in their hope to sign Dayot Upamecano.
The Reds have reportedly reached a pre-agreement with Rennes to sign Jeremy Jacquet in the summer of 2026.
The Reds will pay £60m to sign the 20-year-old exciting centre-back, who is reportedly flying to the North West this morning for medical.
The Merseyside giants will be further boosted to hear the latest news coming out of Bayern Munich on Upamecano.
We have multiple stories on Upamecano’s contract situation. To recap, the French defender is under contract at Bayern through the end of the season and has not signed a new deal.
There have been a lot of talks behind the scenes to reach an agreement, and Bayern were confident at one point that a deal would be struck.
Bayern have set a deadline for Upamecano to come to a decision, but as it stands, there has been no breakthrough.
Falk told CFBayern: “It is TRUE: Bayern Munich have set a deadline for Dayot Upamecano to decide on his contract future.I heard just yesterday that he’s going to have to hurry up with this decision, as we heard the date of the deadline is this Sunday (February 1). So, the centre-back doesn’t have a lot of time left to decide!”
Falk told CFBayern that Bayern and Upamecano’s camp have largely agreed on the salary packages. However, they are not aligned on the signing fee.
The defender’s camp have been demanding around €20m in one instalment. They have been pointing towards that figure for a long time.
Bayern are ready to pay the amount, but they want to spread it over the proposed contract term and pay in several instalments.
It makes sense for the German giants, as paying it in a single instalment creates the risk that Upamecano could simply leave using the release clause and also take the signing fee. Financially, that would be disastrous for Bayern, and they consider it unacceptable.
While Upamecano has been outstanding this season, his future remains uncertain, as his representatives remain unwilling to budge from their position.
The Reds will be looking to bolster their defence next summer. Ibrahima Konate is more likely to leave the club for free next summer, and they also need to replace the injury-prone Joe Gomez.
With Virgil van Dijk not getting any younger, the club must also plan for his long-term replacements. They have been checking on Upamecano for a while and could move for him if he becomes available for free next summer.
