Naomi Layzell played a crucial role in Everton's first WSL win of the season against Charlton Athletic.

The defender tallied her first set of WSL minutes for the Toffees on Sunday afternoon, helping them to three points at Goodison Park.

Charlton ended the match with nine players, but Everton had to wait until the final 10 minutes to grab the winner.

It arrived when Leighanne Robe deflected Holly McNamara’s effort into the visitors’ net to earn the Toffees a deserved victory.

Layzell featured for 62 minutes at centre-back, playing a key and commanding role as she helped deny Charlton from registering a single shot on target.

Elsewhere, Codie Thomas helped Nottingham Forest earn a 2-2 draw with Watford at the City Ground in WSL 2.

The full-back came on in the closing stages to help the hosts see out a deserved point, having come from two goals down against the Hornets.
