Lotito Breaks Silence on Ongoing Lazio Investigation, Apologises for Transfer Mistakes

Lazio president Claudio Lotito revealed his role in the ongoing investigation regarding the club’s sale rumours.

Earlier this week, it was revealed that the prosecutor’s office in Rome is investigating an alleged plot aimed at manipulating the club’s share price on the stock market by running unfunded rumours about a takeover by major investors like JPMorgan Chase.

The three main suspects are Il Tempo editor Luigi Bisignani, former general director of Rai and current president of Banca del Fucino, and Francesco Maiolini, who is also a top official at the same bank.

These three men have threatened to take action against Lotito, but the latter insisted he didn’t name any of them in his complaint, but only cited the facts. The Lazio owner told his version of the events in an interview with Il Corriere della Sera (via Calcio e Finanza).

I have never given investigators any names. Bisignani, Masi, Maiolini? I filed complaints against unknown persons; those names emerged during the investigation. And if, as I have read, these gentlemen wish to take legal action, they are absolutely free to do so. I didn’t report anyone. However, I reported everything I have been subjected to over the past three years and suffered through in silence—things you can’t even imagine. There is no revenge to seek and no settling of scores with anyone. I simply want to continue doing my job well.

Lotito Opens up on Threats

Lotito added that he has been the target of never-ending threats, without specifying their source (presumably from disgruntled Lazio supporters).

It was constant, day and night, even on Christmas, New Year’s Eve and Epiphany. My security detail knows this well because, on many occasions, they were the ones listening to the calls. As a senator, I proudly stand by my decision to waive parliamentary immunity so that the Rome Prosecutor’s Office could obtain my telephone records. There aren’t many of us in the history of Palazzo Madama (the Italian senate).

What Would Lotito Apologise For?

The protesting Lazio fans had asked Lotito to apologise for all the mistakes he committed during his 22-year presidency as part of a list of requests that the latter should fulfil so they would consider ending their boycott.

Apologie? I apologise for something I feel responsible for, for mistakes I have made, such as certain technical decisions I endorsed in the past. But don’t ask me which ones. I have already penned an open letter to the fans. Some of my statements may have been interpreted differently. I will continue working to improve this aspect. But everyone should know that every decision I make is always guided exclusively by what is best for Lazio.
