Monterrey has bolstered its squad with the signing of Argentine winger Lucas Ocampos, who joins the club from Sevilla. The 30-year-old becomes the second Sevilla player to make the switch to Los Rayados this summer, following the arrival of midfielder Óliver Torres.
Ocampos began his professional career with River Plate in Argentina before moving to Europe, where he played for a host of clubs, including AS Monaco, Olympique de Marseille, AC Milan, Ajax and Sevilla. His time at Sevilla has been particularly fruitful; he was instrumental in the club's Europa League victory in 2020, beating Inter Milan in the final. Throughout his career, Ocampos has established himself as a versatile and dynamic player, capable of making a significant impact in various top European leagues.
Known for his versatility, the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner primarily plays as a winger but is also effective as an attacking midfielder or forward. His style of play is characterised by his powerful runs, technical ability, and knack for scoring crucial goals. Whether cutting in from the wing or driving forward through the middle, Ocampos brings creativity and a goal-scoring threat that will be invaluable to Monterrey as they push for success this season.
The Argentine's arrival at Monterrey comes with an intriguing Argentine connection. He will be playing under legendary defender and new manager Martín Demichelis. He comes in as a direct replacement for Maximiliano Meza, who returned to Argentina this summer to join River Plate.
Ocampos is the second player to join Monterrey from Sevilla this summer, following the signing of Óliver Torres. The addition of these two experienced European-based players is a clear signal of Monterrey’s intent to compete for a seventh Liga MX title this season. Ocampos’ familiarity with Torres could also provide a smoother transition into the team, potentially leading to a quick adaptation to the playing style in Mexico.
Monterrey currently sits 5th in the Liga MX standings, but they are coming off a disappointing 2-1 loss to Toluca over the weekend. The arrival of Ocampos could be the spark they need to regain momentum as they look to climb the table. His ability to change games with a moment of brilliance could be exactly what Monterrey needs to challenge for the title this season.
The signing of Ocampos represents a significant coup for Monterrey. His experience, having played with and against the very best in the world, alongside his versatility, and winning mentality will be invaluable as the club looks to make a strong push in the Liga MX. With the Argentine connection between Ocampos and Demichelis, and the familiarity with fellow newcomer Óliver Torres, there is every reason to believe that Ocampos can quickly become a key player for Los Rayados.
The midfielder is likely to make his debut for the club after the upcoming international break. On Saturday 14th September 2024, Los Rayados travel to Santos Laguna for the 7th matchday of Liga MX Apertura action, which Ocampos will be expected to feature.
