Lucas Radebe has revealed why he ended up in goal at Old Trafford, a decision that produced one of Leeds United’s most memorable 1990s images.

“I think we mess around sometimes in training, you know, when we come into training, and we change, we go in goal and stuff like that.” “We didn’t have a reserve goalkeeper.” He told LUTV.

When Mark Beeney was dismissed for handling outside the box, the defender pulled on an oversized green shirt and took the gloves.

“So when Beeno got sent off, I was just covered by a jersey. So when I pulled it off, it was a green jersey. And you could see how big it was. It was massive as well. So, just nothing to lose. You know, I’ve done that before.” “Everybody expected a few goals, but I was confident enough. And I think even the confidence of letting me go in goal gave me that impetus.”

He thwarted Andy Gray twice from range, then dived low to deny Brian McClair, before watching Eric Cantona fire over. Roy Keane’s solitary second-half goal sealed the home win, yet Radebe’s creditable display kept the scoreline respectable.
