Sacked by Grêmio, head coach Luís Castro bade farewell on social media on Monday, thanking the club and its supporters. He shared images from winning the Gauchão and reaching the Copa do Brasil semi-finals, both against Inter, and wished the institution future success.

Castro did not survive the come-from-behind defeat to Vasco on Saturday in a direct relegation fight. Across 50 matches this season he recorded 19 wins, 15 draws and 16 defeats, a 47% record.

According to Globo.com, the club confirmed his exit on Sunday afternoon after he had overseen a final training session, and at CT Luiz Carvalho he took time to say goodbye to staff and greet fans. A little over seven hours later, Renato Portaluppi agreed a return and was announced early on Monday afternoon.

He leaves with a Z-4 points total in the Brasileiro.

Grêmio face Botafogo on Wednesday in a rearranged match from round 21 of the Brasileirão. Renato is expected to meet the squad in Rio de Janeiro. On the night the side will be led by technical coordinator Luiz Felipe Scolari.

The club idol is expected in Porto Alegre on Thursday.
