According to Gremistas.net, Grêmio are close to finalising the appointment of Portuguese coach Luis Castro.

The 64-year-old is expected to arrive in Porto Alegre to take charge following Mano Menezes’s departure. If confirmed, he would be the 11th foreign manager in the club’s history.

Out of work since November after leaving Al-Wasl in the United Arab Emirates, he is the preferred choice of new president Odorico Roman.

Should negotiations be concluded, Grêmio would become the 14th club of his managerial career.

The last foreign coach at the club was Gustavo Quinteros, an Argentine-born coach naturalised as Bolivian. His stint in Porto Alegre did not succeed. Before arriving in Brazil in early 2025, he had recently won a title in Argentina with Vélez Sarsfield.

In Brazil, Luis worked at Botafogo from March 2022 to June 2023, leaving Rio de Janeiro to take charge of Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
