Lukas Podolski played the final match of his career on Saturday for Gornik Zabrze. According to L'Équipe, he also became the club’s owner on Thursday.

The 40-year-old former Germany international, capped 130 times with 49 goals, signed off in a 6-2 win over Radomiak Radom. He came on in the 69th minute, registered 26 touches and had a shot blocked.

His professional career began in 2006 at Cologne, then took in Bayern Munich, Arsenal and Inter Milan, plus stints in Türkiye and Japan.

He returned to his birth country in 2021 to join Gornik Zabrze, the club he supports and long hoped to finish with. This season he lifted the Polish Cup, the team’s first trophy since 1988.

Podolski will remain involved in a new capacity next term. It will be a campaign in which Gornik Zabrze could play in the Champions League after finishing second in the league.
